Common
Visual Problems:
MYOPIA: (nearsightedness):
This very common condition is found in more than two thirds of all
individuals needing glasses or contact lenses. It results in blurred
vision while viewing distant objects. It is caused by a steep cornea
or an irregularly shaped eyeball.
|
|
HYPEROPIA: (farsightedness):
This
condition, by definition, means vision is clear at a distance and
blurry up close. In reality, that may or may not be true. It depends
upon your age and also the power of your prescription. Glasses or
contact lenses can easily help a patient with this condition.
ASTIGMATISM:
This condition is an optical state, not a disease. It is caused when the cornea
is not perfectly round. Think of it as your cornea having a shape similar to
the back of a spoon, with a steeper and a flatter curvature. Astigmatism is
very common. In many cases, toric contact lenses can be fitted to sharpen vision.
Gas permeable contact lenses also may be used. |

CONTACT
LENS TYPES:
Contact lenses can be divided into two main categories:
SOFT - These contain significant amounts of water, have larger diameters
and, sometimes, offer greater comfort.
RGP - Rigid gas permeable lenses are made with special plastics designed
to resist deposits and allow oxygen through to the cornea. They provide
exceptional vision, particularly for those patients with significant
amounts of astigmatism.

The
above groups can be further subdivided into
the following broad groups: |
|
|
|
| |
DAILY
WEAR - These
lenses are worn strictly during waking hours, cleaned daily and
may require enzyme tablets on a schedule
recommended by your optician.
EXTENDED WEAR - These
lenses may be worn while sleeping. You must be very cautious, however,
to follow the wearing and care regimen
as prescribed by your optician. Eye infections are more common with
extended wear lenses than daily wear.
DISPOSABLE - These
lenses are worn for a given period, then thrown away and replaced
with another set. Wearing disposable lenses beyond
their recommended replacement schedule is hazardous to your eye health.
Many individuals
unwittingly put their eyes at risk by not cleaning their lenses,
sleeping in them, or not replacing them when instructed.
Please do not make this mistake! Your eyes are just too important.
At best, you may develop an eye infection eventually. You could also
develop a sight threatening eye ulcer. So, stick to the schedule recommended
by your Optician. For patients most frequently asked questions visit
